AMR (Automatic Meter Reading)

Guernsey Electricity is leading the way in introducing ‘smart’ metering technology. We are installing self-reading meters in more than 25,000 local homes and businesses, which will not only signal the end of estimated accounts, but could also help to reduce carbon emissions.

 

By providing customers with more timely and accurate information on their energy usage they are able to monitor their consumption better and cut down on any unnecessary usage.

 

In 2005 our project received international recognition when it was named Best Automatic Meter Reading Initiative in Europe at the 2005 Metering Awards.

By 2009 we had installed more than 18,000 AMR meters, enabling us to provide more than 59,000 accounts based on actual meter data that was collected automatically. As well as enabling better billing, the technology has also helped in the early detection of faults improving the reliability and efficiency of our distribution network.

 

The UK Government has now realised the many benefits of the technology and has unveiled plans for every home to be equipped with smart meters by the end of 2020.
